Kitchen Garage¶
The Kitchen Garage is the real-world community-kitchen initiative that Toaster Chef models. In the simulation it is the unit that produces food and dispatches Trikes; in the real world it would be a nonprofit community kitchen serving its neighborhood.

[HYPOTHESIS]/ early. No Kitchen Garage of Toaster Chef's own exists yet. Everything below describes the intended model, not a built operation.
Mission and model¶
A Kitchen Garage is a community-scale kitchen that prepares food and moves it into the neighborhood via Trikes and walkup service. In MPowerUP terms it acts as a Circle facilitator: serving food to a community member is the real-world analogue of responding to a help request. The model emphasizes:
- Local food sourcing as both a community-trust mechanic and a carbon-reduction strategy (reducing distance between production and consumption). See the Sustainability directive.
- Staffing sourced in part from houseless and previously incarcerated community members, with an internal career ladder (Pilot → Chef → Mechanic → Head Mechanic).
- Dignity-first service — the same model the Charleston Pilot tests via cashless, pay-what-you-can pricing.
Staffing ratios (as modeled)¶
These ratios are encoded in the simulation, not validated in a real kitchen:
- 1 Chef supports 1 Pilot + walkups; 2 Chefs support 3–5 Pilots + walkups
- 1 Mechanic per 2 Trikes, up to large scale (11–14 Trikes); add a Head Mechanic at large scale
- Maximum 14 Trikes per Kitchen Garage — a second garage is required to scale beyond
Sequencing¶
The deliberate sequencing choice is to prove the Trike + Pilot loop first (see the Charleston Pilot), using partner community kitchens (e.g., Manna Meal) as the "Kitchen Garage" role, and to build or anchor a Toaster Chef Kitchen Garage of our own only after pilot data justifies it.
How the simulation supports it¶
The Simulation Model lets us test Kitchen Garage operating-budget and staffing assumptions before committing real money — for example, calibrating weekly budget, food quality, and economic-sustainability benchmarks against real community-kitchen operational data. Any insight derived this way is tagged [SIMULATION OUTPUT], never [PILOT VALIDATED].
